End of the Year in Speech
The end of school count down is ON!! This time of year is crazy busy. It seems like every day at my school there is a field trip, choir program, Mother’s tea…you name it. Scheduling kids is impossible on top of all the re-evaluations, reports and meetings to attend. I have a hard time keeping up.
Tip 1: Have a Speech TO-DO List
I have a great planner that is my lifeline of sanity. I recently started making a to-do list that I keep on my speech desk. It helps me stay focused on all the things I need to do to wrap up the school year. It’s also handy to have for a Monday morning -all those things you thought you would remember over the weekend. It isn’t fancy, but it keeps me on track! Download your SLP to-do list!
Tip 2: Plan your End of Year Awards
I love recognizing achievement. I focus more on character qualities than quantifiable progress. This reminds students of their unique self-worth! Some examples include: “focus award” “manners award.” I love giving out these End of the Year Award Certificates. I also give out a small treat. Everyone will be proud to get one!
Tip 3: Start packing up
Do you have to move to a new room? new school? or just have to put everything away in storage? Start cleaning out a little each day. I organize by month and theme and use these labels on all my storage bins and binders.
Tip 4: Be Less Social
This one is HARD for me – I love chatting with teacher friends, but it is such a productivity killer. Stay out of the hallways and lounge. Close your door to decrease distractions!
Tip 5: Last Day In Speech Activities
I know everyone’s last day looks different. Do you have a party? Give out a treat? Depending on my caseload, I will send my kids off with a fun little something for summer. Typically I find some bubble wands or a beach ball at Walmart. You can download these cute gift tags and attach it to a gift for your kids.
My students fill out a “My Last Day In Speech” page. It’s a fun way to reflect on their time in speech. I’m always a little surprised by their responses! You can download it below!
I hope some of these tips and ideas help you end the year smoothly! What have you found to be successful? Let me know in the comments!
