Articulation Road Map for L Sounds

I  love using books when targeting speech sounds! Books add quality vocabulary, narratives and other useful literacy concepts to a child's toolbox. Over the years, I have created a “Road Map” that provide a list of books, activities, bookmarks with S and Z words, and tips for targeting L sounds. As a school-based SLP, my hope is that this free resource makes implementing literacy-based therapy strategies in your sessions simple and fun! I highlighted a few of my favorites below, but you can access the full articulation road map for L sounds at the end of this post.

Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin – These clever cows make comical trouble for Farmer Brown after discovering an old typewriter.

How to use it in speech:

  • repetitive phrase: “click, clack moo”
  • L sounds in all word positions and L blends
  • vocabulary, text features, social/emotional connection

Stellaluna by Janell Cannon – After being separated from her mother, Stellaluna adopted by a bird. She then learns how to act like a bird, but eventually reunites with her mother and learns to embrace her bat behaviors.

How to use it in speech:

  • repetition of “Stellaluna”
  • heavy load of L sounds in all word positions
  • interactive episode, compare and contrast, inferencing

The Lady with the Alligator Purse by Mary Ann Hoberman – Are you familiar with the song, The Lady with the Alligator Purse? This picture book pairs with the song, so you can choose to either sing along or just read aloud!

How to use it in speech:

  • repetition of “lady” and “alligator”
  • L sounds in all word positions
  • simple plot and phonological awareness
