Love is in the air! Do you have books you like to pull out on Valentine’s Day? Seasonal books offer opportunities to target specific goals with themed vocabulary content. I’ve created made-for-you lesson plans and activities to download and use with each of these books. They are ideal for using with Kindergarten through 6th-grade students. Over the years as a school-based SLP, I’ve found so much value in using book companions. I hope you get some ideas for using these engaging Valentine’s Day book companions!
Love, Splat by Rob Scotten – Splat the Cat is back, and this time it’s Valentine’s Day and he has a special valentine for Kitten! Splat’s emotions shine through and his big heart shows.
How to use it in speech:

Hedgehugs by Lucy Tapper – a super cute book about two hedgehogs named Horace and Hattie! They are best friends who do so much together except one thing – they can’t hug! Your students will love hearing about all the creative ways Horace and Hattie try to hug each other!

- vocabulary
Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli – A story about an old man, Mr. Hatch, who receives a kind note in the mail. It’s an endearing and heartwarming story about creating relationships and doing kind acts for other people.

- plot
- vocabulary
- social/emotional connection
Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink by Diane deGroat – This is an engaging story about Gilbert who learns the importance of kindness. It is perfect for discussion with your students about apologizing, kindness, and bullying.

- social/emotional connection
- inferencing
- character analysis
- verbs
