Skiing, penguins, and snow, oh my! So many fun narrative themes to incorporate into our speech therapy activities during the winter months. My winter book companions will help you and your students dig into the text using evidence-based strategies and activities.

Learning To Ski With Mr. Magee by Chris Van Duesen – a charming book about Mr. Magee and his dog Dee who go skiing but it does not go as planned! It’s a fun rhyming book that will keep your students on the edge of their seat wondering what will happen to Mr. Magee!

A Loud Winter’s Nap by Katy Hudson – A book that focuses on Tortoise and how he wants to go to sleep for the winter but he keeps being “disturbed” by friends who invite him to join in various winter activities.

Tacky The Penguin by Helen Lester – This is a story about a penguin who is a little bit different from his friends. This is truly delightful story reinforcing the fact to young children that it is alright to be different!

Over And Under The Snow by Kate Messner – This book reveals a whole world of unseen creatures burrowed under winter white, as discovered by little girl and her dad as they are cross-country skiing. It’s a great way to teach students about hibernation as well!

Sneezy The Snowman by Maureen Wright – Sneezy the snowman has a problem, he is sick and can’t get warm. How do you make a snowman feel warm without him melting?? Your students will enjoy reading as Sneezy and his friends find the best way to help him feel warm in this sweet story.
