Thanksgiving Book Companions for Speech Therapy

book companions to use for thanksgiving activities in speech therapy with elementary students

Do you have books that you like to pull out for the Thanksgiving season? Seasonal books are so fun and offer opportunities to target specific goals with themed vocabulary content. My Thanksgiving book companions for speech therapy will help you and your students dive into the text using evidence-based strategies and activities. They were created to make literacy-based speech therapy easy and fun to use with your K thru 5th grade students.

Here's some of what is included in myย Thanksgiving book companionsย for speech therapy:

  • standards alignment
  • lesson plans
  • activities
  • speech sound word lists
  • sticky notes- for quick references
  • digital copies using Google Slides

Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano – Turkey has a problem! He is going to be the main course for Thanksgiving! BUT, he has an idea! What if he doesn't look like a turkey? Your students will enjoy Turkey's comical ideas to save his Thanksgiving in this story!

How to use it in speech:

  • illustration study
  • compare and contrast
  • repetitive text
  • sequencing

10 Turkeys in the Road by Brenda Reeves Sturgis – A farmer becomes more and more frustrated with ten turkeys who are in the road practicing their circus routines.ย The turkeys fly away one at a time, but in the end, the clever turkeys get exactly what they were after all along. This is a simple and quick story to use in your speech therapy sessions.

How to use it in speech:

  • repetitive text
  • irregular and regular past tense verbs
  • sequencing
  • rhyming pattern

Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson – The bear series is one of my absolute favorites, so of course, I included the Thanksgiving story! Bear invites his friends over for a Thanksgiving feast but becomes sad when he has no food to share. Bear then learns that his stories are valued by all of his friends.

How to use it in speech:

  • repetitive text
  • rhyming
  • sequencing
  • social/emotional connection

Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet – I love the Macy's Day parade? This book tells the story of Tony Sarg, the man who invented the giant parade balloons that became the trademark of the Macy's Parade. This is a great historical nonfictional book to add to your Thanksgiving book collection.

How to use it in speech:

  • vocabulary
  • character analysis
  • illustration study
  • problem-solving

You can purchase all 4 of the Thanksgiving book companionsย on TPT. All of the research and planning is done for you – just print, go, and enjoy!
