Christmas Book Companions for Speech Therapy

 

Merry Christmas! ‘Tis the season for Santa, decorating, caroling, giving, and serving! Do you have books you like to pull out for the Christmas season? Seasonal books offer opportunities to target specific goals with themed vocabulary content. Iโ€™ve created made-for-you lesson plans and activities to download and use with each of these books. Fletcher and the Snowflake Christmas by Julia Rawlinson – Sweet Fletcher is always thinking of others! This holiday season, he is very concerned about the chance that Santa might not find his friends, the rabbits, new burrow. Fletcher and some other animal friends work hard to help Santa find the rabbits' new burrow. Your students will love this story!

Bear Stays Up for Christmas by Karma Wilson – Bear misses Christmas EVERY year because he is always hibernating. His friends wake him up on Christmas Eve and are determined to keep him awake until Christmas this year so that he will not miss it. Your students will love experiencing Bear's first Christmas with him!

How to use it in speech:

  • rhyming
  • inferencing
  • repetitive text

The 12 Sleighs of Christmas by Sherri Duskey Rinker – Can you imagine Santa steering a sleigh that resembles a semi-truck?!? When Santa's sleigh is found to be in horrible condition, his elves create other imaginative alternatives for Santa to fly on Christmas Eve. Which sleigh would you or your students choose? Which one do you think Santa will choose?

Mooseltoe by Margie Palatini – Moose is super organized this Christmas, except he forgot to buy a Christmas tree and it's already Christmas Eve! Do you think stores will have any more trees for sale? What will Moose do to save Christmas?

Pete The Cat Saves Christmas by James Dean – Santa is sick on Christmas Eve! He asks Pete to help by delivering all of the presents this year! Pete agrees but feels too small for such a task. Will Pete persevere and save Christmas?
