Fall Book Companions for Speech Therapy

Fall. There are so many great books out there about the leaves changing color and falling to the ground. I chose 3 of them to dig deeper into for these fall book companions for your speech therapy sessions. Theseย print-and-go lesson plans were created to make implementing literacy-based speech therapy more simple and enjoyable for you and your students this fall.

Here's some of what's included in the fall book companions:

  • pre-reading strategies (READ why this is important)
  • story grammar

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak – Not only are the illustrations in this book BEAUTIFUL, they also give your students a great visual of the changes that occur from summer to fall.

How to use it in speech:

  • sensory language
  • illustration study
  • figurative language
  • vocabulary

Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson- Fletcher does everything possible to try and help his favorite tree as it loses its leaves. This story will tug on your heart strings as well as give your students a sweet illustration of how trees change from fall to winter.

How to use it in speech:

  • phonemic awareness
  • regular and irregular verbs
  • social/emotional connection
  • inferencing

The Golden Acornย by Katy Hudson- This book is part of a series about a group of forest friends. Your students will enjoy this book as they learn about the importance of teamwork and friendships.

How to use it in speech:

  • story sequencing
  • text features
  • social/emotional connection
