Football! Many of my students (especially the boys) are huge college and pro football fans, so we like to incorporate activities around this theme. If you are working on compare/contrast, consider comparing football against another sport, or two football teams (you can work on geographic location comparisons). Incorporate expressive writing (like EET) with a description on “How to play football” or “All about football.” I love the book, Hooray Fly Guy It’s a fun, quick read with a lot of football terminology and a great message! I also use the book, Dino Football. This one has amazing vocabulary and if you have any dinosaur fans, they will love this book!
Make sure to download the Football Dice and Dot easy craft while you’re practicing your articulation and language goals this week also!
The events of September 11 can be tricky but most classrooms do cover it. I love that it is now celebrated as “Patriot Day” to honor first responders and community helpers so take citizenship or patriotic angle if necessary with kids. It’s important as SLPs we continue to support the classroom curriculum for our students, especially with vocabulary. I created a Patriot Day Lap Book to do just that. It also makes a great resource to display at an open house or to simply send home to parents. I typically share the books, Fireboat and Saved By The Boats to show kids that there will ALWAYS be helpers and heroes when a tragedy occurs.
If you don’t want to take on a project of a Lap Book, you can still incorporate a patriotic theme. For articulation, you can color flags from the 50 Trials Articulation pages and for your language students, it’s a good time to review informational writing and sequencing steps with themes like, “I Can Be A Good Citizen” or “I Can Be A Leader.”
Talk Like A Pirate Day is always a fun time in speech! Check out this pirate blog post for more ideas. Here are some of my favorite pirate-themed books. I especially love the Sheep In A Ship book. If you’re familiar with the Sheep In A Jeep series, this is by the same author. It’s great for working on the SH sound for articulation, rhyming, sequencing, problem-solving and more!
If you are looking for NO PREP activities, check out Pirate Build-A-Face or Pirate Dice and Dot – both are perfect for your mixed groups. Everyone can be doing the same activity but working on their individualized goals. If you are looking for a fun articulation game, check out the Pirate Quick-Play Articulation game! It’s always a hit!
Apples! Many classrooms are celebrating Johnny Appleseed Day. I love bringing in different varieties of apples and comparing/contrasting them with a fun little taste test. You can discuss all the different foods we eat with apples in them like pie or muffins, etc. The book, “Apples” by Gail Gibbons is hands-down my favorite book. It is filled with phenomenal tier 2 and 3 vocabulary words. Download the Apple Dice and Dot for your mixed groups! For your articulation students who need lots of reps, use the apple page from the 5o Trials Articulation pack!
