Week 1: Patriot Day and 9/11 Remembrance
BOOKS: Fireboat, Saved By The Boats The events of September 11 can be tricky to cover. If you work with younger students, you can focus on celebrating “Patriot Day”, honoring first responders and community helpers. The people recognized in both of these stories show kids that there will ALWAYS be helpers and heroes when a tragedy occurs.
ARTICULATION: 50 Articulation Trials (flags page)
LANGUAGE: Patriot Day Lapbook, I Can Be A Good Citizen writing As SLPs, it’s important that we support the classroom curriculum for our students, especially with vocabulary. I created the Patriot Day Lap Book to do exactly that. It also makes a fantastic Open House display! If you’d prefer a less extensive project, you can review information writing and sequencing with themes like “I can be a good citizen” or “I can be a leader.”
Week 2: Talk Like A Pirate
BOOKS: How To Be A Pirate, The Pirates Next Door
ARTICULATION: Pirate Match & Say, Pirate Quick Play Articulation, Pirate Build-A-Face
LANGUAGE: Pirate Match & Say, Pirate Build-A-Face, Pirate Green Screen The Pirate Match & Say and Build-A-Face activities are both NO PREP! They’re perfect for mixed groups since each student can work on individual goals.
Week 3: Apples
BOOKS: Apple Picking Day, Apples, Apple Trouble! Since so many classrooms celebrate Johnny Appleseed, I like bringing in different varieties of apples for students to taste. They have so much fun comparing/contrasting each kind. You can also discuss all the different foods that are made with apples, such applesauce, pie, and muffins. Apple by Gail Gibbons is hands-down my favorite book for this theme! It’s packed with phenomenal tier 2 and tier 3 words!
ARTICULATION: 50 Articulation Trials (apples), Apple Dice & Dot The FREE digital apples articulation resource is perfect for your students who need lots of reps .
LANGUAGE: Apple Green Screen, Apple Dice & Dot
Week 4: Community Helpers
BOOKS: Clothesline Clues, What Do People Do All Day, Whose Hat Is This?, The Post Office Book
ARTICULATION: Community Helpers Match & Say
LANGUAGE: Community Helpers Match & Say This activity comes in two formats (printable and digital), covering articulation AND language goals! It’s great for teletherapy sessions and mixed groups.
