Merry Christmas everyone!! You know how much I love using children’s books for building vocabulary and language skills in my speech room, right? Here are 8 of my favorite Christmas books to use in Speech Therapy. Why is using literature SO important in our therapy sessions? The research shows it. I can point you to many research articles but specifically THIS ONE about how it improves literal and inferential language skills and THIS ONE that explains how dialogic reading improves expressive and receptive language.  *this post contains Amazon affiliate links.

Snowmen At Christmas by Caralyn Buehner. I love the Snowmen series. Why do I love it, what do I use it for in therapy?
-Vocabulary
-Rhyming
-Story Recall
-Figurative Language
-Writing prompt (this story lends itself to great imagination – what do you thing snowmen do while we sleep? So fun to see them come up with things. They love this!

Mooseltoe by Margie Palatini. You guys-precious!! Bless it, this story was written about me- thinking you got it all going on doing #allthethings and BAM- you forgot the tree, lol. Story of my life. Anyway. Why do I love using it in speech?
-CRAZY good vocabulary (especially good if you are working on suffixes)
-Problem solving/critical thinking
-Plot/Theme
-Creative Writing

The best Christmas books to use in Speech Therapy

Bear Stays Up For Christmas by Karma Wilson. I think I have all the sweet Bear books. Just so darn adorable! Why do I love using this book?
-Vocabulary
-Rhyme
-Sequencing
-Story Recall
-Adjectives

Bear’s First Christmas by Robert Kinerk. (Different Bear story). How do I use this in speech?
-Vocabulary (really, really great vocabulary) Lexile AD850!
-Inferencing
-Sequencing
-Figurative Language

The 12 Sleighs of Christmas by Sheri Duskey Rinker (same author of Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site) I think boys will be over the moon for this one!

The Not Very Merry Pout Pout Fish – by Deborah Diesen
Another NEW book for 2017. If you are a Pout Pout Fish fan, you will adore this one also. Here is how I’m using it in speech:
