August Speech Therapy Plans
August plans for speech therapy is often a bit tricky. It seems everyone starts school at different times. I like to do a mix of summer-related activities and back-to-school themed with my students. I think even if you are not a school-based SLP, kids are in that mindset and the content is still relevant if you work with a private caseload. Below, the weeks are broken down and ideas are provided for books, articulation, and language activities. You can print the free calendar to use and add your own ideas and lesson plans for the month! I hope you also check out the other monthly lesson plans here on my blog as well! Inside each lesson plan, there are links to TpT resources and other blog posts that feature books I recommend. This post contains Amazon affiliate links that helps support this blog at no cost to you! My goal is to help take some planning stress off of you – giving you a variety of engaging activities!
August SLP Plans Week 1:
School supplies are out at stores, and I’m sure kids are thinking about the new school year. This can cause some anxiety for kids about new classmates and teachers and all the expectations that area placed on them. I love the book, The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes. It is a perfect children’s book that I use even with my middle schoolers to open discussion into problem-solving when things don’t go our way or as we planned. For articulation, we get out the minimal prep Summer Quick-Play Articulation. You can even pair this with your articulation word lists or articulation cards to add more repetitions into the session. #goals If have my students practice a row of words or a certain number of cards then take a turn in the game. August is the last month of the summer journal writing. You can use this for simple daily writing prompts individually or have them use as designed for daily writing – have them bring it in for you to discuss/evaluate progress. I focus on a new written expression goal each week for them to improve.
August Plans Week 2:
I have 2 books suggestions for this week. If you want to focus on inclusion and being welcoming to everyone, I highly recommend the book, “Strictly No Elephants” – this book is powerful. If you have kids who struggle with acceptance, Chrysanthemum is a beautiful book for giving kids confidence in their own self-worth. For my articulation kids, they help me decorate my bulletin board (sort of, lol). We do the Battle Style Dice and Dot then make a cactus craft to either take home or I choose some to display on my “Stick With Kindness In Speech” board! Continue written expression goals with the Summer Writing Prompts.
August Plans Week 3:
The Pout Pout Fish Goes To School has SO MANY opportunities to target social topics, vocabulary, and more! For articulation, grab these FREE 50 Trials Articulation pages and challenge your students to get 50+ repetitions in speech by coloring or covering pictures after practicing their target words. For language goals, we focus on goals with our summer journal writing prompts.
August Speech Plans Week 4:
If your students got 50 Trials, then this week, challenge them to 100 Articulation Trials with this free download! They will be so proud of all those repetitions! One of my favorite books is The Rainbow Fish! It’s another great book that ties summer with school themes. OK! Finish that summer writing strong with the last few days of the daily prompts!
I hope this post has given you some fun ideas for your therapy room in August! Make sure you see all the free downloads for the books mentioned above on my posts for the language bookmarks!
