August Speech Therapy Lesson Plans: 5 Week of Back-to-School, Space, and Farm Ideas

August means back-to-school season for both teachers and speech therapists. Use farm and space activities to welcome kids to therapy or add some back-to-school fun to the mix. These ideas will help make the transition back to learning exciting for kids. Use August speech therapy lesson plans to promote kindness, friendship, and more for the upcoming year.

In August, our speech therapy sessions include farm and space themes, kindness, and other back-to-school activities. I’ve put together some fun back-to-school-themed resources to make your speech therapy activities easier with your students during August.

Week 1: Farm

With these exciting activities, you can learn about farm animals and improve your speech skills! Kids will love hearing about adorable animal adventures while they practice their words.

BOOKS

Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Farm: The animals are tired of their baths and run away. They soon find out how much they genuinely need Mrs. Wishy Washy!

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type: In this hilarious story, the farm animals have access to a typewriter and are leaving notes for the farmer.

Hogwash!: A frazzled farmer is trying to wash his pigs! Join him as he stumbles through the muck to get them all clean.

ARTICULATION

Cow Popper Companion: Use binder clips to stand up targets and knock them down with the cow ball popper. Say the target words as they are knocked down.

Farm Match & Say: There are many ways to play this game. Students draw cards to match their page and practice target words. If they pull an “OH NO, You Stepped in a Mud Puddle!”, they lose their card and start over.

LANGUAGE

Farm/Pond Narrative Notes: In speech therapy, use these print-and-go cheat sheets with your favorite farm—and pond-themed picture books, like Little Blue Truck. 

Read & Review: Click, Clack, Moo Book Companion: This book companion can be used to discuss farm life and introduce plenty of new vocabulary during speech.

The Cow Popper game and farm match and say are also great for working on language skills.

Week 2: Space

Outer space is such an excellent place to explore! Use read-alouds and printables to make August speech therapy lesson plans extra fun.

National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Space: Learn about space and everything there is to see with this nonfiction book.

Counting On Katherine: Katherine is an African American mathematician who worked with NASA during the space race. This is her story!

ARTICULATION

Articulation 50 Trials (stars and sun): Track articulation and language skills with these cute space-themed mats!

Space Match & Say: These no-prep speech therapy activities are great for mixed group therapy during a Space-themed unit and cover a wide range of articulation and language goals. 

LANGUAGE

Space Match & Say: Use the matching activity for language as well! Kids will match their cards to the sheet and say the target words.

Week 3: Friendship and Kindness

August is a great time to talk about friendship and kindness, so use these fun books and activities to switch things up in your plans.

BOOKS

Strictly No Elephants: On Pet Club Day, all animals are invited, but not elephants. This is a story of true friendship and inclusion!

Chrysanthemum: Chrysanthemum is a sweet story about being kind to everyone, no matter what!

I Walk with Vanessa: Join these students as they discover what to do when someone else is treated poorly!

The Invisible Boy: When two students who don’t have friends unite, they find a way to shine brightly during a class project!

Battle Dice & Dot with Kindness Cactus Craft: Celebrate kindness with this cute cactus craft and bulletin board display!

Back-To-School Narrative Notes: These back-to-school notes cover Turkey’s First Day of School, The Invisible Boy, and Clark The Shark.

Week 4: Back-To-School

As kids go back to school, add some back-to-school-themed stories and articulation activities to the mix. They’ll appreciate your effort in these August speech therapy lesson plans.
